The International Workshop on Nanoscale Spectroscopy and Nanotechnology 8 (NSS-8), organized by the Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM) and Advanced Photon Source (APS), was held under sunny, summer skies from July 28-31, 2014, in the world-class Gleacher Center in downtown Chicago, Illinois.

The 3 1/2-day workshop featured sessions on novel nanoscale materials as well as on the techniques used to study them, a number of exhibitors who showed their latest scientific instruments and products, and various social events.

NSS is a biennial meeting series to share information on the latest research advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Specific sessions for the 2014 event covered SPM-and electron microscopy-based nanoscience, synchrotron applications to nanomaterials, solar/molecular processes, piezoelectrics, and nano-optics, to name just a few.

The conference was organized by Dr. Saw-Wai Hla, leader of the CNM Electronic and Magnetic Materials and Devices Group and Professor of Physics at Ohio University, with co-chair Volker Rose of the X-Ray Microscopy Group at Argonne National Laboratory. The conference was hosted by Argonne National Laboratory and sponsored by Ohio University's Nanoscale and Quantum Phenomena Institute.

Keynote speakers included

  • Maki Kawai, Executive Director of RIKEN and Professor, University of Tokyo, Japan;
  • Peter Littlewood, Director of Argonne National Laboratory;
  • Edward Vicenzi, a research scientist at the Smithsonian Institute; and
  • Roland Wiesendanger, a professor at the University of Hamburg, Germany.

Previous workshops have been held in Trieste, Italy; Tokyo, Japan; Washington, D.C.; Rathen, Germany; Ohio; Kobe, Japan; and Zurich, Switzerland.
